Gary Spencer Millidge Gary Millidge started producing mini comics in the 1970's, way before
it was fashionable and way before the internet made it really easy. Famed
now for his long running publication Strangehaven Garys first start in
the comics game was the unpublished mini comic, Insomnia. Insomnia was never
published, and sat in Gary's archive collecting dust for over 20 years,
until now. Only
100 copies of Insomnia have been produced.
The
32-page
mini-comic
measures
8.25" x
6", is laser printed in black and white with several full
colour pages. This is a great insight into the world of Millidge and
the birth
of Strangehaven.
Certain similarities may be apparent to the Strangehaven reader, including
the visual appearance of the main character, the nine-panel grid and
various common themes. For a number of reasons, Insomnia was abandoned
and Strangehaven was created. Check it out at
the Thing 2005 and meet Gary in person!!! HousD:
HousD by Ali Graham is a daily
web comic featuring Ali and his pals as they play alot of computer
games and stuff and larf at their sister and have adventures with penguins,
and meet robots and monkeys. Its funny, honest, and in the current
episode they're following the plot to a Tarantino film. Here's the
part where they meet the wolf. Ali has been drawing
for centuries now and has over 600 comics to his name. You can sit
there for days reading them one at a time. Alis work has a dry wit
that's subtle and builds up to a cascading orchestration once you take
in the myriad of subtle nuances his work has to offer. Everything
is done through minute changes of expression, slight changes in the
eyes, the minute furrowing of the eyebrows. This is one of my favorite
pieces. I guess you should
really read the rest of the comic to understand it, but believe me,
I larfed. Ali will be there selling his stuff at the Thing, so get
yourself down there and get him to sign your pirated el-cheapo free
print-out collection of his work!!!! Weebl and Bob Weebl & Bob is a
groovy animation that appears every two weeks and has a huge cult following.
The great think about Weebl & Bob in comparison to regular comics is
you dont have to do any hard work whatsoever, you just sort of sit
there and let the animation take you on its little journey. A bit like
TV I guess, only better. Plus they are obviously highly recalcitrant!!! Generally speaking
Weebl & Bob is pretty funny, they're are a well formed pair of
sympathetic semi-pheres with invisible central sections and are convincing
in a
multipude of
rolls.
Their curves are egg like. But I like it best
when Weebl is sick, its funny in a sick way. You can go through the
entire archive one after the other!!! Its great. Theres a few interludes
by Skoo that are funny. And after you've checked them out you can meet
them at the thing and buy all their stuff. Good job they have
lino!!! Its so easy to clean AND its stylish too!!! Local Girl The first thing
you'll notice about Local Girl is the lavish line work and attention
to detail, but further than that, theres an incredible subtlty
to the prose and content of each of the short stories contained in
this vast tomb of exsuisite art!!! The short stories,
some of them only 1 panel long focus around the conscious and subconsious
imaginations of the creator and her time on this planet. Below was
a little piece that made me larf!!! Ooops, thats the
Weebl and Bob image again, doh, this bit made me larf: Shes looking at
that site, JOBSERVE.
Ha ha ha. This bit made me larf as well, that old going into your bank
and drawing out money but leaving it behind on the counter larf!!!!!
I chortle everytime I loose £150. I actually lost £20 myself the other
day and it could have been in one of 5 places, most of which where
public, but I happened to be in B&Q and I asked if anyone had hande
in £20 and they had. I couldn't believe it!!! I hate it when people
find my money and return it!!! Really. But yeah, Local
Girl is pretty funny!!! Check her out on the day on buy her stuff and
leave your wallet on her table for a larf!!! It'll be worth it in the
end!!! |

REVIEWS
Roger Langridge:

Roger Langridge totally
rules!!!! His work is highly professional, (well he is a professional
i guess) colourful, clear, crisp, easy to read, funny, hilarious,
and totally groovy!!!! Roger is probably more famous for his
Fred The Clown material than anything else, but Fred The Clown
is just the tip of the iceburg that is Rogers gargantuun portfolio!!!
Rogers current work 'The
Hotel Fred' is testimant to the fact that he can draw non
clown related material, but even a cursory browse through his
web site will reveal other incredible work such as 'Diabolical
Liberty' and 'The
Thirteenth Floor' which you have to pay to read, as well
as a whole host of other stuff such as BLOODY HELL #1, THE FABULOUS
WORLD OF THINGS, FRANKEN-STEIN MEETS SHIRLEY TEMPLE, FRED THE
CLOWN - The Minicomic, SPITOON FUNNIES and DR. SPUTNIK #1 & #2.
Check them out!!!! And See Roger in person At the Thing on 19
March 2005!!!!

Rogers first mini-comic
Small Zone:

Shane Shebsey's position
in the great scheme of things is mini and small press trader
extraordinaire. The Small Zone website features information
on new releases from the small press, a whose who in the small
press world, details of events, and even a gallery where I
found these wonders by a hither before unknown genius!!!

Its a cat
and it was drawn by Shane only last year!!!! The
site even hosts a chat room with regular meetings every Sunday
night between 8-9pm!!! Under the fun features there
are links to convention photos, smallzone polls, and loads of information
on how to get published and get your comic off the ground.
The site also has a page for its printing and distribution
services. But enough of all that, lets look at some of Chebbos
other drawings, tee hee he.

This is
pretty cool stuff chebbo!!! Shanes principal strength
to those who know him is the huge range of comics
he brings to conventions to sell. His table, or tables so vast
are his offerings, are chocker-block full of interesting pieces,
so check him out when you get there and buy his stuff, and maybe
get him to print and distribute your comics so you become super
famous
extra quickly!!!! Earth
Bound:

Earth bound by Zoe
Stead is one of he best!!! Her skill is nothing short of
professional and i'd wager she could go far with it
if she wanted to.

The
comic is about a load of people that hit each other with
swords and have wings and stuff. But rest assured, there's
some amazing artwork in there, cool half light shadows,
amazing perspectives and scifi fantasy backdrops, angels
and demons, and there's even a plot with a strain of humour
running throughout. Check out this amazing picture:

You
can see Zoe on the day, buy her comics, eat her sweets,
buy her limited edition framed prints, buy her post cards,
chat to her, or even put in a bid for her Earthbound plushie
which is a stuffed toy she stitched together and stands
about 20" tall. Spend 3 hours now reading her full archives
online now and impress her on the day with suitable questions
like, 'are these cakes free?'
David
Baillie:

David Bailie has a
real talent. Drawing Bat Girl being one of them, tee hee,
er, yeah. Like I say David Baillie rules. In particular
his volume entitled David Baillies's AWKWARD FASCINATION
Compendium.

The
comendium goes into the history of David Baillie and
his reasons to be, or not to be. Apparently he used to
work
for British Aerospace but gave it up so he could send
speculative Batman strips off to DC, like
this:

But really, his work
is involved, I particuly liked the ballad of Jack. The
last lines read:
So there it is, readers
You've seen his mistake
Don't sell your soul
For a company stake
They'll put you on the payroll
Put you to sleep
Your time here is precious
And their money too cheap!

Check
him out at his whatsit at the thing and guy some stuff. |
